| the work ominous is a mini-installation which contains a pile of green blankets with on top a little red tent. inside this tent is a small lamp that is connected to a sensor. when a viewer approaches the installation, the lamp will turn on. for me, the tent, represents a metaphor for fear and the idea of waiting for the ominous while you’re camping on your own with your flashlight close by. through the use of scaling you can feel the terror of the camper for the big angry world outside. despite that, the viewer also feels the desire to sit in the cosy little tent. ‘ominous’ reacts on the growing fear of the unknown in (western) europe. the question to be asked is: when does ignorance become fear. |
